Before you get started:
Equipment:
KeepersLog can be used from any browser on a laptop/desktop, tablet, or a phone. However you may have an easier time doing the initial setup from a laptop/desktop just because of the keyboard and larger display (though phones work too). Once you set up all the members and items, it's easy to do checkouts from a laptop or a phone. You can add new members and items from a phone too if you don't mind doing a little typing on a phone keyboard.
Tags:
Each individual item will need a tag so it may be logged into the system and tracked. You will probably want to attach the tag physically to the item itself (or the tag can be written on the item). A tag must have a unique combination of numbers and/or letters called a tag string. KeepersLog will complain if you try to enter the same letter/number combination for two different items on the same team, so you don't have to worry about accidentally duplicating tag strings.
Tag string strategies:
There are different strategies for generating unique tag strings. One strategy is keep a running count of logged items, then just use the current item count as the tag string. The advantage to this strategy is the tag string will be short and easy to type.
Another strategy is use unique letters to indicate the type of item and add a number to show the count for that item. For instance you could use rs12 (or rs.12, rs-12, etc.) to indicate red shirt number 12 - just make sure if you have red slacks as an item type that you use different letters (i.e., rsl.12).
You are allowed to use special characters like dashes (rs-12), but dashes in particular can be a little hard to find when you need to type in a tag (especially on a phone). You might think about using a period instead (e.g. rs.12) because they are easier to find on a phone keyboard. Spaces are allowed too, but you must be consistent on entering the space each time.
Tag strings can be anything - they just have to be unique and preferably short. Don't worry about the tag string being descriptive or being in a logical order by size etc. short is the most important thing for tag strings. You will enter a description for each item into the database that will be displayed whenever you do something with the item.
